While it’s been long known that ultra-processed foods are not good for the body, new research suggests that the effects may be more problematic than realized. A growing body of research continues to highlight the connection between diet and brain health. A recent study published in the Australian journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia suggests that consuming higher amounts of ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, raising concerns about eating habits that have become common in many households.
The study, conducted by researchers at Monash University in Australia, analyzed data from more than 2,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 70 who were free of dementia at the beginning of the research. Investigators examined participants’ dietary habits and compared them with measures of cognitive performance. In contrast, those who followed the MIND diet, which was centralized on dark leafy green, berries, nuts, whole grains, olive oil and fish, and limited sugar, red meat and unhealthy fats, saw a better cognitive response overall.
Ultra-processed foods are industrially manufactured products that often contain additives, preservatives, artificial flavors, and ingredients rarely used in home cooking. Common examples include packaged snacks, sugary beverages, instant meals, processed baked goods, and many ready-to-eat convenience foods. These products are a staple to many in modern diets because of the accessibility, affordability, and long shelf life. Experts point to the ties of ultra-processed foods to other health concerns, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. These diseases are also linked to an increase in dementia. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Daniel Amen, a California-based psychiatrist and founder of Amen Clinics, there was discussion regarding 10% increase in ultra-processed food intake can lead to a change in an overall attention span in adults. While many of us enjoy a sweet treat now and then, it’s important to aim for foods and drinks that promote the longevity of good health instead of the instant gratification that ultra-processed foods provide.
