Nestlé USA has officially eliminated artificial food dyes from its entire U.S. food and beverage portfolio, marking a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to simplify ingredient lists and respond to changing consumer preferences. The move fulfills a commitment the company announced in 2025 to remove all FD&C synthetic colors from its products by mid-2026.
According to the company, any products that previously contained artificial dyes have either been reformulated using alternative ingredients or had the synthetic colors removed altogether. Nestlé says the change is part of a broader strategy focused on nutrition, transparency, and providing consumers with products that better align with today’s health-conscious lifestyles.
Artificial food dyes have been used for decades to enhance the appearance of foods such as cereals, candies, beverages, frozen desserts, and snack products. While the dyes are approved for use by U.S. regulators, they have remained the subject of ongoing debate. States like California have taken matters into their own hands, choosing to ban harmful dyes in foods. Concerns over the safety of synthetic food colorings have increased in recent years, with studies examining their potential links to behavioral issues in children and other health effects. Researchers continue to investigate these possible associations.
Nestlé’s decision reflects a broader shift occurring throughout the food industry. As consumers increasingly seek products with recognizable ingredients and cleaner labels, many major food manufacturers have begun reformulating recipes to remove artificial additives. Companies are investing in natural coloring alternatives derived from fruits, vegetables, and spices while maintaining the taste, quality, and shelf life consumers expect.
The transition has been several years in the making. Marty Thompson, the CEO of Nestlé USA, said, “This work didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it builds on years of progress and the ongoing commitment of teams across our business to evolve recipes while protecting what people know and love.” Company leaders noted that extensive research and development were required before the changes could be implemented across hundreds of products.
