Iowa’s Landmark MAHA Bill Tackles Excessive Screen Time and Child Health

Iowa has taken a significant step toward improving children’s health and well-being with the signing of a landmark Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) bill. The legislation, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds alongside U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., focuses on addressing several factors that contribute to chronic health issues among young people, including poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and excessive screen use.

The announcement came shortly after the first-ever Surgeon General’s warning about the dangers of excessive screen time among children and adolescents. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy shared, “HHS is releasing the first-ever Surgeon General’s warning focused on the harms of excessive screen use because American children are facing a growing crisis of social isolation, poor mental health, physical inactivity, and digital addiction. Iowa’s leadership shows what is possible when states partner with the Trump Administration to help children live healthier, more active, and more connected lives.”

As concerns continue to grow over the excessive use of technology and the long-term effects that it may have on youth and adolescents, Iowa’s legislation represents a landmark step forward. Governor Reynolds praised the effort, stating, “Secretary Kennedy inspired the MAHA movement and has never wavered in his commitment to restoring the health of our country. Iowa is proud to help lead this mission by enacting legislation that supports better nutrition, physical activity, health and wellness, and limitations on cell phones and instructional screen time in our schools.”

By taking action to promote both the mental and physical well-being of children and teenagers, Iowa is setting an example for the nation. We hope that other states will follow suit by adopting similar measures to support healthier lifestyles and learning environments for young people.
